Wearied | Disgusted | Hopeless

This is how conservative evangelicals make me feel: wearied, disgusted, and hopeless; and even more so the longer I continue to witness their ignorance and ugliness and culture-war-mongering. They pretend to love you, with their public smiles and their "I'm praying for you," and then they backstab you on social media outlets as they promote half-truths and lies. They then wonder why their churches are not growing, why they have not baptized anyone in over a year, why their numbers are stagnate.

The Facebook-shared headline from extreme right-wing propagandist fake news source MadWorldNews.com was featured on a Christian woman's page and reads: "Woman Raised By Lesbian Mothers Infuriates Liberals, Drops Truth Bomb About Her Childhood." The source is known for publishing fake news. Why, then, would a professing regenerate Christian promote a fake news source unless he or she already possesses an agenda. The agenda here is, clearly, to oppose same-sex marriage. This is accomplished via a narrative of alleged emotional and/or psychological child abuse. (Thus far studies have proven that children reared by same-sexed parents are faring well and, in some cases, even better than those with male and female parents: link/link/link/link. This field of study is new and will require more testing in the future.)

From this fake news source we read: "This is my main issue with the gay community right now . . . These people that think they have a right to decide which parents the children have access to." The issue here is complex in heterosexual scenarios, as well, where the father is separated from the mother and the child is unable, by the will of the mother, to visit and to share one's life with the father. The story continues: "I would spend an almost unhealthy amount of time at their houses [the houses that had a father and a mother] because I was fascinated by the heterosexual family structure. I couldn't replace my actual father. It was still obvious to me there was quite a lot missing." Many children of a single parent can share this alleged woman's desire for a father.

But the children growing up in a same-sexed parental situations of which I am personally familiar do not share this woman's concerns. Do not be deceived: the primary reason for the publishing of such an article is to deny same-gendered couples the right to wed, the right to raise children (adopted or otherwise), the right to be normalized in our American culture. The Political and Religious Right complain when gay men and women are sexually promiscuous and they complain when gay men and women desire life-long committed relationships and a family. This, frankly, is pure insanity and overt schizophrenia. The conclusion must be that the Right want LGBTQ eradicated.

I have noted before the self-dehumanizing tactics of Religious Right evangelicals and their love affair with lies. (link) Their war with the LGBTQ community reminds me of the manner in which the Pharisees of Jesus' day treated people, to which Jesus responded, "But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you lock people out of the kingdom of heaven. For you do not go in yourselves, and when others are going in, you stop them." (Matt. 23:13) Like the Religious Right, the Pharisees were certain that they were getting into heaven, and that God was "on their side." They were, tragically, wrong. Jesus continues: "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you cross sea and land to make a single convert, and you make the new convert twice as much a child of hell as yourselves." (Matt. 23:15) For Jesus to call the Religious Right of His day "children of hell" was scandalous. What was their primary problem?

Jesus sums up the problem of such religious-oriented individuals: "For you tithe mint, dill, and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith." (Matt. 23:23) The Pharisees tithed scrupulously, meticulously, insignificant vegetable products such as mint, dill, cummin; yet completely ignored being just, showing mercy to others, and being trustworthy. Why? Because all the Pharisees knew was appearing right, while making sure others did right, to which Jesus responds:
Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. . . . Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which on the outside look beautiful, but inside they are full of the bones of the dead and of all kinds of filth. So you also on the outside look righteous to others, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness. (Matt. 23:25, 27, 28)
The Religious Right "Amen!" their pastors every Sunday when he preaches about their depravity and how they cannot live up to the standards of pure righteousness. This is why we must be accounted righteous by grace through faith in Christ. We long to pursue righteousness, in truth, but the absolute attaining of such is beyond our grasp.

Still, these same evangelicals require this absolute righteousness from the lost, and especially from LGBTQ folk! You evangelical hypocrites! You erect a standard that you yourself cannot attain, except by grace through faith in Christ, and then you demand that same standard on the unregenerate? You expect unregenerate people to behave as should the regenerate? You think that righteous laws will change the hearts of people? Do you not read your Bibles? Are you truly that ignorant? If the righteous struggle to behave righteously then how on earth do you expect the unrighteous to do so? You weary me.

Moreover, you think that your Political Right candidates are going to legislate morality in this country and lead us "back to God"? I watched one of you post on Facebook the following meme: "Trump: The man who gave up his billionaire lifestyle to be humiliated, ridiculed, and slandered in order to save the American people." Delusion is a terrible reality. First, no, he did not give up his alleged billionaire lifestyle. So, cease the attempt at Messianizing Donald J. Trump. Second, he humiliates himself with every new tweet, either by lying or by deflecting. Third, I was quite certain, oh beloved Christian, that Jesus Christ was our only Savior. If America is going to be "saved," neither Donald Trump nor the Religious Right are going to do the saving. I am disgusted by you.

I remain hopeless for the future of evangelicals, hopeless that they will change. When they stoop to overt lying in order to support their agenda then there is no hope. When they look to Republicans to save America rather than Jesus Christ then there is no hope. They reject biblical repentance. The Jesus they heed is the Republican Jesus they crafted in their own image. They and many Republicans decry the reality of LGBTQ people and remain sheepishly and eerily silent in the face of the murdering of LGBTQ souls, precious people created in the image of God their Creator, worldwide. (link/link/link/link)  But they will continue attending their white evangelical churches, singing their revivalistic hymns, with their Bibles in hand while ridiculing those awful sinners.
